San Francisco Bay Area jazz-guitar wunderkind Mimi Fox is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the release of the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band — as well as San Francisco's “Summer of Love” — with May I Introduce to You [September 8th, Ridgeway Records] by the San Francisco String Trio. On this “reimaging” of the Fab Four’s classic album, Fox (six-time winner of DownBeat’s International Critics Poll) is joined by violinist Mads Tolling (two-time Grammy winner with the Turtle Island Quartet) and celebrated bassist/vocalist Jeff Denson. Guitar Player is proud to help present the San Francisco String Trio’s CD release party at the legendary Freight & Salvage in Berkeley, California on the first Thursday in September.
“The idea was to do something different to shake up these fantastic songs, but not just for the sake of doing something new,” says Fox. “We’re all coming from a jazz background and we like to mix things up.”
“We love to blend genres,” adds Tolling, “and you can hear tango, R&B, pop and classical influences, too. We’re all arrangers, and we’d work on pieces individually, and then bring them in to work on them as a group and really make them come to life.”
